NY Tenants Sue Trump Family Over Inflated Rent

More than 130,000 current and former tenants filed a class-action lawsuit against President Trump and his family business for allegedly elevating rents in rent-regulated apartments since 1992. Filed in Kings County Supreme Court in New York, the lawsuit alleges President Trump, his late father Fred, and other members of the family increased rent by falsifying the cost of capital building improvements in reports to New York City housing authorities. “This was a huge tax fraud scheme, designed to allow Fred Trump to transfer money to his family members without paying estate and gift taxes, while at the same time, stealing money from their rent-regulated apartment house tenants,” said Jerry Parker, senior partner at Parker Waichman, which filed the lawsuit on behalf…

More Americans Seek To Cocoon Politically

In another sign of the political divide in the United States, 42 percent of Americans say they would be hesitant to move to an area where a majority of people have different political views from their own. That’s according to a new survey conducted this month by Redfin, which found the notion of cocooning increased from 32 percent in June and was the highest share since 2017, when Redfin began asking that survey question. “With political signs lining the front yards of homes across America, house hunters can’t escape the political views of their prospective neighbors,” said Redfin chief economist Daryl Fairweather. “While living among like-minded people is important to many homebuyers, key concerns like affordability and space are more…

Trump Tweets: “GOODBYE SUBURBS!” Under Biden

President Trump once again warned Americans on Wednesday that the suburbs will be destroyed if former Vice President Joe Biden is elected next month. The President Tweeted, “Biden supports Cory Booker’s Bill that will force low income housing in the Suburbs, which will lower property values and bring crime to your neighborhoods. If Dems win, GOODBYE SUBURBS!” Biden supports Cory Booker’s Bill that will force low income housing in the Suburbs, which will lower property values and bring crime to your neighborhoods. If Dems win, GOODBYE SUBURBS!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 7, 2020 Sen. Booker’s HOME Act would require states that receive community development block grants to create “an inclusive zoning strategy” to attract more affordable housing and “create…

Urban Flight: How Will It Impact Election?

Could the trend toward greater suburbanization – and migration among states – have an impact on next month’s election in the United States? An analysis released Tuesday by realtor.com finds that the majority of out-of-town searches for homes in the battleground states of Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – all of which voted for President Trump in 2016 – come from blue states and counties. But that doesn’t mean it will tip an election – at least not yet. “For years homebuyers have looked from urban areas to more suburban and rural areas to find the affordability that makes buying a home possible. The additional time at home and flexibility to work remotely as a result of the pandemic have…

NAHB Backs Trump’s Supreme Court Nominee

The National Association of Home Builders on Tuesday came out in support of Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to be the next U.S. Supreme Court justice. “NAHB supports President Trump’s nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett as Associate Justice to the U.S. Supreme Court,” NAHB Chairman Chuck Fowke said. “Throughout her distinguished career as a federal appellate judge and Notre Dame law professor, Judge Barrett has been recognized for her sharp legal mind and as a steadfast defender of the Constitution. In her court decisions, Judge Barrett has been a bulwark against government overreach, ruling in favor of private property rights and providing certainty for small business owners who must constantly grapple with burdensome regulations.” Trump nominated Barrett on Saturday. Senate…

Trump, Carson Vow To “Save Our Suburbs”

President Trump again vowed to “save our suburbs” from the “crime and chaos in Democrat run cities,” this time in a joint op-ed with Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson published in the Wall Street Journal. “We won’t allow this to happen,” Trump and Carson wrote. “That’s why we stopped the last administration’s radical social-engineering project that would have transformed the suburbs from the top down. We reversed an Obama-Biden regulation that would have empowered the Department of Housing and Urban Development to abolish single-family zoning, compel the construction of high-density “stack and pack” apartment buildings in residential neighborhoods, and forcibly transform neighborhoods across America so they look and feel the way far-left ideologues and technocratic bureaucrats think they should.”…

NJ AG To Trump: Prove Affordable Housing Dangerous

As President Trump again warned of the dangers of affordable housing to the suburbs, the New Jersey attorney general challenged the Trump Administration to provide evidence that affordable housing leads to increased crime in communities. Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal filed two Freedom of Information Act requests seeking the administration to provide “any factual information it has to support the President’s recent inflammatory and unfounded claims that the presence of affordable housing in communities leads to increased crime.”  “Divisive appeals to prejudice with unfounded statements blaming desegregation for crime are detached from the reality here in New Jersey and across the country,” Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said. “As a prosecutor and now as New Jersey’s chief law enforcement officer,…

Trump Warns Of Low-Income Housing Under Biden

President Trump on Wednesday again warned about low-income housing “invading” suburban neighborhoods if Joe Biden is elected president, repeating a theme he has brought up in recent weeks. The president tweeted: “The “suburban housewife” will be voting for me. They want safety & are thrilled that I ended the long running program where low income housing would invade their neighborhood. Biden would reinstall it, in a bigger form, with Corey Booker in charge! @foxandfriends @MariaBartiromo” The “suburban housewife” will be voting for me.
