Federal housing officials have pledged to support people affected by the wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui as the state’s governor warns developers to stay away.

Officials at the Federal Housing Finance Agency say racial and ethnic valuation gaps in home appraisals are being reduced in a majority of states.
According to a blog published Tuesday, “Although an appraisal valuation gap continues to exist between white and minority population tracts, data indicate a reduced gap following actions by stakeholders and federal, state, and local agencies, including the release of the PAVE Action Plan.”

There have been 1.3 million cases where loss mitigation options have helped borrowers remain in their homes since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to officials at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
A few common tools available through these home retention programs include a loan modification, forbearance agreement, or repayment plan.
However, some of these resources that once were effective in avoiding foreclosures now result in little to no reductions in monthly mortgage payments due to spiking interest rates.
As a result, a new proposal is being offered by the Federal Housing Administration, so borrowers have a potentially more effective option to avoid foreclosure. This tool is called the Payment Supplement Partial Claim.…
A new independent office has been created for manufactured housing programs at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Employees at the Office of Manufactured Housing Programs will report to Assistant Secretary for Housing and Federal Housing Commissioner Julia Gordon, according to a press release.
The office was previously organized under the Office of Housing’s Office of Risk Management and Regulatory Affairs.
Support of manufactured housing is a part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to increase the overall supply of affordable housing.

Privately-owned housing starts surpassed estimates in May, beating expectations as the housing market remains tight.
The U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the latest residential construction statistics on Tuesday morning.
“Privately-owned housing starts in May were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,631,000. This is 21.7% (±14.8%) above the revised April estimate of 1,340,000 and is 5.7% (±10.8%) above the May 2022 rate of 1,543,000. Single‐family housing starts in May were at a rate of 997,000; this is 18.5% (±14.1%) above the revised April figure of 841,000,” a press release says.

A Virginia man who worked as an assistant inspector general for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison after being convicted of engaging in a scheme to steer government contracts to a personal friend.
Eghbal “Eddie” Saffarinia, 63, of Front Royal, was sentenced on Thursday, according to a press release issued by officials at the U.S. Department of Justice.
Saffarinia was employed by HUD-OIG from 2012 to 2017 and oversaw the Office of Information Technology. He was also the head of contracting activity, according to court paperwork.

The Thriving Communities technical assistance program was designed to help local government leaders identify land for housing development near transportation projects, develop preservation and anti-displacement strategies, reduce barriers to location-efficient housing, improve intergovernmental coordination, and support a holistic approach to housing and transportation.
